Álamos, Mexico
2016
The project is located in the western region of Mexico, right in the limits of the Sierra de Álamos - Río Cuchujaqui Biosphere Reserve. The site was formerly a public pool rest area besides a seasonal creek, reassigned for this project.
site plan
The project was designed to be:
A gateway to the natural reserve; with the access trail going right below the building and through the courtyard.
An interpretation centre for the reserve; with four interactive galleries, an information counter and a gift shop.
An outdoor activity hub; with a zip line going across the creek to another tower and back, and two rappel walls with different heights.
An attractive spot for birdwatchers, with a six-story-high observation tower
A gathering point for public events, with a multipurpose room in the lower level.
A rest area; with a café and restrooms.
An administrative office for the park.
plan views
The building consists of four wings surrounding a courtyard. The larger wings both have terraces and the largest one incorporates an observation tower. The shape of the building is adapted to the site to respect existing trees and incorporate an existing pool.
sections
The project includes locally produced bricks and its shape and overall look is a reference to the region’s mining history.
