At ODA in collaboration with Tecnológico de Monterrey
Monterrey, Mexico
2016
The rectory at Tecnológico de Monterrey is one of its most historical and iconic buildings. It was originally a library, and it currently hosts the university’s administrative offices. As part of a renovation program, our office was assigned to adapt a given conceptual proposal and develop it into a buildable project. Amongst the proposals, a rooftop terrace was requested.
The building has a perfect north-south orientation. The terrace is located in the eastern side of its roof. The existing elevator shaft had to be modified to reach this level, and a staircase had to be designed to reach it. For the terrace to be possible, it had to avoid the existing concrete slabs as much as possible since, according to structural studies performed on it, it wouldn’t be safe to put more load on them. So, a metallic structure was designed to be loaded directly on the columns as to not compromise the existing slabs, and serve as the base for the terrace’s floor. A pergola with tilted louvers helps to shade the terrace during the afternoon.
