Tokyo, Japan
2014
Tezuka Architects is an internationally acclaimed architecture firm in Tokyo, Japan, famous for its user-centered projects, especially when it comes to children. The office tends to work with simple shapes and traditional-Japanese-inspired woodwork. Hand-crafted work plays a big role in both the design process and project presentations. Projects have a more visceral design approach, where simple yet intriguing solutions are proposed for the client’s needs. High skilled hand labour is preferred over complex computer modelling.
During my internship there, my job mainly consisted in doing precise scale models of the office’s projects, and I was also able to contribute in the design process.
Amongst them I:
Helped design some pews for a Baptist Church.
Participated in a Japanese national design competition for Mt. Fuji’s Visitor Centre.
Collaborated in the design of the wooden structure of a school in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Worked hand in hand with Takaharu Tezuka to design a school in Manila, Philippines, as I was set in charge of designing it following the architect’s and the client’s guidance.
